I began my career as a shampoo assistant and I did it twice. Once while I was in school, working under my first mentor, Tamika, and again after becoming licensed, working under my mentor Dyonne.

I learned so much from both of them, and they are phenomenal stylists. But one lesson stayed with me more than anything else: the moment of relaxation, release, and care that happens during the shampoo process.

When I eventually elevated from assisting and was no longer available to shampoo, clients were genuinely saddened.

That’s when I learned the weight the shampoo carries in the realm of beauty.
